The Spring
season is in full bloom with dogwoods and azaleas showing off their
beautiful blossoms, and triangle residents enjoying the milder temperatures
and additional hours of daylight. To welcome and celebrate this year's
Spring, Hum Sub held its annual Basant Bahaar program on Sunday April 22,
2007 in the auditorium of
Green
Hope
High School
in
Cary
,
NC
.
The doors to
the auditorium opened at 4:30pm and the program started promptly at 5:00pm.
The auditorium was packed and there was hardly an empty seat to be found. As
in previous years, the event was free of charge and open to the public. The
program was emceed by the articulate and talented duo of Archana Aida and
Sidd Chopra. Standup Comedy between items was provided by the humorous
Satish Ozha.
The theme for this year's Basant Bahaar was Avartana: the Charm of Fusion.
The program featured a total of 17 numbers featuring 98 talented performers,
who danced, sang and played musical instruments fusing the traditional with
the modern in a seamless and entertaining way. The audience was delighted by
the wide variety of dances and the beautiful costumes that the girls/ladies
and boys/gentlemen wore while performing. Dances and songs from different
regions of
India
were included in the evening and there were several items that combined
elements from both Eastern and Western cultures to introduce another element
of fusion in the evening's program.
The dinner break was at 6:45pm and featured delectable food from Spice and
Curry Restaurant. Audience members enjoyed chicken chettinad, bagara rice,
chole, kofta curry, naan and gulab jamoon. After completing the satisfying
dinner, everyone returned to the auditorium to view the final portion of the
program.
The Cultural Arts manager of the Town of
Cary
, Lyman Collins spoke briefly and commended the efforts of Hum Sub in
bringing the rich and diverse Indian culture to the triangle community. All
were impressed with the great amount of talent displayed and the efforts
that organizers and participants made to produce such a high quality show.
The successful evening concluded with Hum Sub president Hima Kumar
presenting performers with participation certificates and Dippin’ Dots
gift cards.
All in all,
this year’s Basant Bahaar was a highly enjoyable Spring event, with an
emphasis on Avartana: the Charm of Fusion.
